With the GDC in full swing, the news about Sony's new motion controller simply named 'Move' is doing the rounds online. So it's time for the important questions that only gamers can answer. Afterall, we are the target audience and will ultimately be the consumers buying this product.
I've read a few things about the new motion controller but for those of you who haven't heard or read anything yet, here's a quick rundown for you:
The controller's button layout includes a shoulder button, start, select, and the usual four PlayStation action buttons (eg. X and O). It features vibrating Dual Shock, and its 3D position and orientation tracking sensors can even pick up rotation in your wrists.
So basically, it's Sony's version of a product that is likely to fall in the same market as the Nintendo Wii but is also looking like it could be the Sony contender against Microsoft's 'Project Natal'.
I have a Nintendo Wii and in comparison to my PC and Xbox 360 console, the Wii doesn't get all that much time from me as is. So how will using a motion controller like this make games more enjoyable for me? Wii sports was fun for a while but I like shooters, RPGs and MMOs. So it seems to me that for a new product like 'Move' to be successful, it will all come down to what games will be available for it and how they play. The games that were used in the Sony Move demonstrations varied and one particular demo did feature an early version of 'SOCOM 4' using the PlayStation Move Sub Controller which is the equivalent of the Nintendo Wii's Nunchuk.
I won't go out and say that Sony's new controller won't somehow find it's way to me as it's early days yet but from what I've read and seen already, I'm still not 100 per cent sold on the idea of replacing my current controller with the Sony Move. This controller might appeal to casual gamers but for everyone else, it's more than likely going to be something they'd try out at a convention or in-store at least before rushing out to buy it.
The Sony Move will sell in three different packages when it releases which include just the Move Wands (for gamers who already own the PlayStation Eye Camera), The Eye Camera, Move Wands and a game, and the final package which includes everything as well as the PS3 console.
